Regents Graduate Programs

Regents' Advisory Committee on Graduates Study (RACGS)

The Ohio Board of Regents has been charged by the General Assembly with the responsibility to approve, approve with stipulations, or disapprove all new degrees and new degree programs to be offered by institutions of higher education in the State of Ohio. As part of the process needed to fulfill this general charge, the Chancellor of the Regents has delegated the responsibility for the assessment of new graduate degree programs to the Regents’ Advisory Committee on Graduate Study (RACGS), which is composed of graduate deans of the Ohio universities. Graduate program evaluation by RACGS leads to a formal recommendation and report from RACGS to the Chancellor of the Regents. Program assessment and evaluation are based on the criteria provided in the RACGS Guidelines and Procedures for Review and Approval of Graduate Degree Programs.

Research Officers' Council (ROC)

The Research Officers' Council of Ohio is composed of the individuals who serve as the primary research contact at the research universities in the state of Ohio. A research officer is the designated institutional liaison (usually the Vice President for Research) for a given university. The Council currently includes representatives of Ohio’s 13 public universities, two freestanding (public) colleges of medicine, and two private research universities, Case Western Reserve University and University of Dayton. The primary function of the Research Officers’ Council is to work in close consultation with the Ohio Board of Regents in the development and administration of the various research funding programs which have been authorized or are being considered by the Ohio General Assembly. All requests for research funding from the Regents must be made through the designated research officer of a given university.

Research Support Programs

Recognizing the importance of investments in university research to the state, the Ohio General Assembly has initiated three major research support programs: Action Fund, Hayes Investment Fund and Research Incentive. Since the vast majority of funding for research is provided by the federal government and by industry, the state has adopted the strategy of utilizing its research grant programs as vehicles for leveraging federal funds, identifying and building areas of unique strength with the potential for national competitiveness, and stimulating partnerships among Ohio universities and industries.
